After years of wildfires sweeping through the area, the iconic Silver Falls area of the Upper Entiat is set to reopen to the public this spring, regaining access to dozens of popular campsites and more than 40 miles of trail.

The Entiat valley and mountains sit on the eastern side of the Cascade Crest,  south of Lake Chelan and north of Highway 2.

As the snow melts, and the crews are assess the area, highly-used trails such as Larch Lakes, Emerald Park and the Entiat River will hopefully be available to hikers once again. Hikers should expect landscapes and trails changed by the wildfires.

“These places in the Upper Entiat are special, and I welcome folks back to the valley," said Entiat District Ranger James Simino. "However, wildfires like the Wolverine Fire changed this landscape leaving behind hazards which visitors need to be aware of, such as burned out stump holes and downed trees across trails.”

Forest Service partners will do their best to monitor potential flood and debris dangers, though due to ongoing safety concerns, some locations will be restricted to day-use only throughout the 2017 season.

Campsite Status

  • Fox Creek Campground: Eight sites will be available for overnight camping. The remaining sites along the river will be available for day use only.
  • Lake Creek Campground: All sites will be available.
  • Spruce Grove Campground: Will be open for day use only.
  • Cottonwood Campground: Twelve sites will be available for overnight camping. The remaining sites along the river will be available for day use only.
  • Silver Falls Campground: Currently closed, though anticipated to open once hazardous tree removal is complete in spring. Most sites will likely be available for overnight camping.
  • North Fork Campground: Will be closed to overnight camping in 2017 due to wildfire impacts. Once hazardous tree removal is complete, day use of the area will be allowed.

For updates on spring conditions and trail openings, check trip reports and head over to the Okanogan-Wenatchee Forest Service website, or call the Entiat Ranger Station at (509) 784-4700.
