First Icicle Road Slide Cleared
As of May 27, a debris slide on the Icicle River Road has been cleared, providing access to Eightmile Campground, Eightmile Road and several popular destinations in the Enchantment Lakes permit area.
It's been a couple of weeks, but we wanted hikers to know that the debris slide that was blocking the Icicle River Road near Eightmile Campground has been cleared. This popular road near Leavenworth, already impacted from a major slide in 2008, washed out in a new section in April. This had blocked access to Eightmile Road, a popular access point to the Enchantments.
This comes as a great relief to Enchantment permit holders. The slide had left Snow Lake as the only access point into the Enchantment Lakes. Now hikers will be able to hike into the Upper Enchantments via Colchuck Lake (#1599) and Aasgard Pass (if snow conditions permit) this summer. Other popular hikes include Eightmile Lake (#1552) and Lake Caroline (#1554).
The road opened on May 27th, just in time for Memorial Day. Now repair crews can direct their focus to fixing the May 2008 slide that closed the Icicle River Road just past the Ida Creek Campground. This slide has cut off access for the past three years to a number of additional hikes (and campgrounds). Last fall, the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest began road work to relocate a 1.5 mile portion of the flooded road. At that time, the Forest had projected to complete the work and reopen the road for this summer. We'll keep you posted on its status!
In the meantime, stay apprised of the many road washouts on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest on this webpage. In fact, you should bookmark it.
