Finally! I have driven past the turn off for this state park since before I can remember, on my way to Stehekin with family or friends, heading to Entiat for a weekend, for hiking trips in the Methow, or even just visiting Wenatchee. Somehow it’s never been quite the right timing to stop at Peshastin. And this time it was almost too late, but I made it work.

There was no one else there, and the sun was setting behind the clouds. The park closes at dusk, so I hurried; I was in such a rush in fact, that I didn’t even change out of my after-hike boots, so shoutout to Keen’s Elsa slip-on boots for seeing me through what was about a mile-long zigzagging loop hike with some elevation. This was particularly admirable since since the trail is in pretty bad shape on the east side of the park.

I bet a crew working here for two solid weekends could rebench the whole system pretty quickly. The soil is sandy but there's barely any duff to bother with. It would take a bit longer to repair some of the retaining walls—some of the switchback reinforcements are pretty battered and weathered looking.

The views of the valley are great pretty much the whole time, complete with vineyards and hillsides dotted with yellow and orange aspens among the green evergreens. Sonically, Peshastin was the polar opposite of my other hikes this trip – where most of my locations this time were totally silent, this place was loud; it’s just a few hundred yards off Highway 2.

But it’s a really nice spot for a hike, especially considering such a lovely little leg-stretcher is so close to a major artery. I hope I can do it again soon. Now that I know how great it is (and what a fast hike) I’ll make more of a effort to do so.
