This lollipop trail of about 2 miles has many educational signs installed by the forest service. The terrain is beautifully dry, eastside terrain. Lodgepole pine dominates initially due to a fire many years ago. A more mature forest, with firs, Engelmann Spruce are found further upstream.

The stick part of the lollipop is paved and suitable to all, although it does have some dilapidated bridges to cross. By taking the left-hand trail and hiking clockwise, you will encounter the more difficult trail obstacles sooner. The youngsters and scramblers in your group will enjoy climbing over and around many downed logs. Others will enjoy identifying the numerous ferns, ground covers, and mushrooms.

After a mile or so, the trail turns towards the creek and crosses on a stout one-log bridge. Shortly afterwards a faint trail continues upriver. This unmaintained trail is known as the Early Winters Trail. Some map sources show it extending alongside Highway 20 to Washington Pass and beyond. Prior to the North Cascades Highway this trail provided for cross-mountain travel.
After you’ve satisfied your curiosity on that historical trail turn back down river alongside the increasingly well-groomed Lone Pine Loop. Soon the trail returns to pavement and back to the Lone Fir Campground. This is a quiet little campground with water and fire pits.

Getting There

Driving from the west take Highway 20 through the North Cascades. After traversing Washington Pass descend about three miles to the left hand turnoff for Cutthhroat Lake.

Pass this and in about 1 mile the Lone Fir Campground is on your right. Turn in here and take the loop road through the campground to your right.

A small parking area with signboard is immediately on the right. Be sure to claim a campsite first if you plan to stay here.
